The Somatic experiencing Method (SE)
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a powerful and profound method based on body awareness for releasing chronic stress, processing difficult experiences and alleviating trauma symptoms. The method uses a psychophysical approach. It supports the regulation of the autonomic nervous system. The method is based on the idea that the experienced trauma is not just a past event, but that the body and nervous system remain in a state of stress due to the experienced trauma. However, the body can be released from this state gradually. The SE method supports the body's natural recovery, strengthens resilience, and brings a sense of security.
In the Somatic Experiencing® method, it is essential to approach a stressful or traumatic experience through the body and interaction. This is done by focusing on the body’s sensations and calming the nervous system while being supported in a safe space. We work in a balanced and gentle way with sensations, images, emotions, consciousness and body movements. The goal is to release the energy stuck in the nervous system safely and gradually. This release helps build new positive neural connections in the brain. It removes trauma symptoms, enables permanent change and gives the opportunity to move forward in life.
The SE method for processing traumatic experiences was developed by the American Peter Levine (PhD). Levine discovered that people have an innate ability to cope with the effects of trauma. The method is based on the understanding that trauma is a neurophysiological state and that the body can restore a healthy connection between body and mind.

The approach is body-oriented (“bottom-up”), in contrast to many talk therapies, which typically follow a more “top-down” approach.
